NAAE responds to review of The Australian Curriculum: The Arts
NAAE has always supported the development of a high-quality national curriculum that includes the five arts subjects of Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. We strongly support the central entitlement enshrined in the Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts (ACARA, 2011) that:
‘The Australian Curriculum for the Arts will be based on the assumption that all young Australians are entitled to engage with the five Arts subjects and should be given an opportunity to experience the special knowledge and skills base of each.’ (ACARA, 2011, p. 4).
‘We advocate for a national curriculum that can be adopted or adapted to state, territory, sector and school contexts to meet the needs of students across Australia, and respect the epistemological, ontological and pedagogical differences across and within The Arts.
‘NAAE acknowledges that developing a national curriculum for The Arts from Foundation to Year 10 and including the five distinct arts subjects was a challenging process. NAAE welcomes the review of the Australian Curriculum, including The Arts and we believe this is a timely opportunity to refine and improve the existing curriculum.’
